Himeshji: Interview (timesofindia)

Published by Jem at 5:11 pm under HR Interviews

His chart-busters are similar to the point of being indistinguishable. Himesh Reshammiya’s voice, once cited as unique, has been the target of criticism as many find his voice to be too nasal.

Hobby as a profession:

I have always been crazy about music and when I started to producing serials at 16, I was already composing the title tracks of the serials. I got my first break as a producer with Ahmedabad Doordarshan. One of my biggest feats as a producer was the success of Andaz that boasted of a glittering starcast. But, in my heart I always wanted to be a music director. However, no one would have given a break to a 16-year-old. So, I worked hard as a producer, but kept on composing. Eventually, I was able to turn my hobby into profession. It is the best thing that can happen to anyone. Which is why today, I can put in 18-19 hours of work each day.

Salman Khan and Himesh — What’s the equation?

When I was producing serials, I was supposed to produce a movie starring Salman Khan. I am talking about the time when Maine Pyar Kiya was released. Unfortunately, that did not happen. But Salman bhai kept in touch with me. He gave me my first big break in Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya in 1998. From PKTDK to Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya, it’s been a long association with Salman bhai and I will never forget what he has done for me.

From a new-composer-on-the-block-to 36 hits in one year to launching his own album:

Recently I performed at the Wembley stadium in London and the place was packed. There was 100 per cent occupancy. Even international artists don’t get a full house. I did. If this isn’t divine intervention, what is?

The Surat Controversy:

I should have been cautious. I shouldn’t have said that even Mukesh, RD Burman and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sang with a nasal twang. I am really sorry. It wasn’t my intention to hurt anyone. Ashaji is very upset with me and all I can say is I’m sorry. She has every right to discipline me like a mother. I have always accepted the fact that I sing with a nasal twang and I have taken criticism pertaining to that in my stride. What happened in Surat shouldn’t have happened. And when I said that I have composed 36 hit songs in a year, I wasn’t boasting, I was merely stating facts.

Work and Himesh are partners, bachpan se:

I lost my elder brother when I was 13. He was 22 when he died. My father, Vipin Reshammiya (veteran Gujarati music director) had loads of expectations from his son and when he died, our world came crashing. Then, I decided that I am going to fulfil my father’s dreams. Since then it has always been work.

Developing into brand Himesh:

It is not easy to live up to expectations. I have to prove myself everyday. No one is accepted at face value. My friend, Prashant Chadha, is responsible for my new look. Right from the topi to the stubble, to the black trenchcoat, it was his idea. And as long as it suits my image, I have no complaints.

Taking criticism in his stride:

Is there a way out? Irrespective of whatever profession you are in, you have to face flak. There is only one per cent that chastises me, the remaining 99 per cent are with me and love my work. I am also thankful to that one per cent who are not with me — they egg me on.

Himesh and accolades:

I want my music to be a hit with the masses and the classes. Only recently, someone was telling me how they have christened the autos plying between Chandni Chowk to Park Circus as ‘Himesh autos’. Isn’t that wonderful? I would like to thank the autowallahs for being my ‘publicity vehicle’. I have the support of the people and that is my biggest reward. As far as awards go, who doesn’t like accolades? I have won popular awards and even those who have criticised me have feted me.

The multi-tasking Himesh:

It has been a fascinating journey. From a producer to composer to singer to endorsing fashion labels to becoming an actor. I have the privilege to play so many roles in one lifetime. Aap Ka Surroor — The Movie is semi-autobiographical. It will be directed by my friend, Prashant Chadha, and I would like to describe it as an edge-of-the-seatthriller. It is semi-auto\biographical in the sense that the romance angle in the story will be based on my life. Moreover, people have so may questions about me — Why I wear caps? Why is there pathos in my eyes? All these will be answered. It will be shot across 18 countries and will have nine of my best sings till date.

On plagiarism:

These days most songs are either copied from Pakistani or Arabic and Western numbers. This shouldn’t be happening. I am proud that my name has not featured in the plagiarists’ list. Show me one song of mine which has been copied? You won’t be able to think of any, which is why I work so hard to come up with original melodies.

Indooska….I think the promo was only shown at the concert in Wembley Arena (the concert I went to) as that was when Himeshji made the official announcement about the movie – & I know the promo was not shown at any other UK concerts either….try & catch it on TV. Jem :D

hiii my 3 dearest friends Indooska,Toushtee and Souradipa. it makes me so proud that i have 3 new friends added in my list. a big thank u to all. u know wat it did showed himesh interview and his 15 mins glimpses on tv ( breakfast news) yesterday early morning. my aunt did watched it and it was soooooooooooooo interesting that she couldn’t wake me. she was cursing why she didn’t go there. the standing concert was marvellous, top of the world. my sis friends went there. tro top sa show la. some funny things happened there, the security guard was not letting the fans to go near himesh so the boys thrEW THE GUARDS outside. also himesh did wonders by singing KITNE ARMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN NON- STOP WITHOUT MUSIC FOR 15 MINUTES. HE CHALLENGED THE BOYS TO STOP DANCING FOR 15 MINUTES BUT WE MAURITIANS COULDN’T ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE. HE FINALLY SANG A MEDLEY OF ALL HIS SONGS NON- STOP AGAIN FOR HALF AND HOUR. THIS GUY IS TRULY A GEM NOT BECAUSE HE IS DOING WONDERS BUT I WAS EXTREMELY SURPRISED HOW COULD PEOPLE DANCED TO SOME OF HIS SONGS WITHOUT MUSIC!!!! HIMESH JUST SANG WITHOUT MUSIC YET PEOPLE ARE DANCING!!!

A VERY BIG NEWS IS THAT HIMESH IS COMING BACK TO MAURITIUS AGAIN NEXT YEAR. FOR THE 1ST TIME IN HIS CAREER, HE DID 2 SHOWS IN MAURITIUS WHICH HE NEVER DID ABROAD. HIS VCD WILL BE AVAILABLE SOON IN MARKET. WAIT 4 IT!!!!
