Himeshji talking about Namastey London!!!
Though he has been around since 1998 and hit real big-time in 2003 with Tere Naam, the Himesh Reshammiya juggernaut hit the highway only with the late-2005 release of Aashiq Banaya Aapne that started his ‘vocal’ epidemic. The next one year was virtually a Himesh blitzkrieg, which was aborted by a savvy Himesh cutting short his workload, quitting unimportant films and becoming ‘choosy’. Before that happened, however, the earthy composer experimented by signing Namastey London with Javed Akhtar.
What was special about working with Javed Akhtar?
I was always looking forward to the day when I could work with him. This time, thanks to Vipulji, things fell into place. Namastey London is the right vehicle for this, as we need verse with depth. Vipulji understands good lyrics and it was a very, very great experience working on the seven songs, and the Mehfil Mix album of unplugged songs for which Javedsaab wrote fresh nazms and poetry just for the songs. Javedsaab of course is a living legend and his sense of poetry is amazing.
Which way did the offer go – from you to him or from Vipul to both of you?
When Vipulji suggested the idea I called Javedsaab up, and it was very nice of him to agree to work with me.
And what was your working system?
Six of the seven songs were written to my tunes, and it was amazing the way Javedsaab understood my compositions and yet gave so much depth with simplicity. Three of the songs were written very fast. After a few sittings, aisa lagaa hi nahin ki we were working for the first time together!
Vis-a-vis your normal music, how would you define the songs of Namastey London? All the songs are as usual based on Indian roots, with folk and raags. But the sound is very contemporary. And yet they are different from many of my songs. These are intense love songs that will find instant identification with lovers. Besides mine, I have used a lot of fresh and young voices like those of Zubeen Garg, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Jayesh Gandhi.
The film stars Rishi Kapoor, one of the most musical stars of all time. Is he singing any song in this film as in your earlier film Yeh Hai Jalwa?
Rishi Kapoorsaab is there in one of the songs, but no words have been lip-synched by him. The songs have been filmed on Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif and Upen Patel.
Do you personally feel that the results are up to expectations?
I realize that expectations are sky-high, and that the small section of the media that does not digest my success is waiting for me to trip. But I think that I have succeeded. The bottomline of success today is sales and the figures I have been hearing are great for an album that has hardly been there for a few days in the market. As for the critics, I hope to please them too this time and I think that they will be satisfied.
Can we now look at you working with Javedsaab again as well as with other lyricists like Gulzar or Prasoon Joshi even as you continue to work with Sameer?
Yes. Main to chahata hoon ki main sab ke saath kaam karoon.
