Interview: Himeshji
After having donned the cap of singer and music composer, Himesh will be seen as an actor in the film, Aap Kaa Surroor: The Moviee: The Real Luv Story which is releasing on June 29.
The whole nation is swinging to the songs of Aap Kaa Surroor. You must be feeling good.
Yes, I really like it. When I had started shooting, people said I had gone crazy. I have not turned into an actor to merely fulfill my ambition. There was a conviction within me that acting will come naturally to me.
The film’s script is pretty good. Prashant Chaddha has directed the film beautifully. I sing from my heart, I compose from my heart and this time, I have acted from my heart.
The role of HR, which I play in the film, should appeal to the people. Let’s see if people make any allegations upon me this time. I accept that I am a nasal singer. I defended myself for a good one year and it ultimately led to a controversy.
Now, I don’t want to defend anything. Whatever you say about me, I will accept. Whatever I am today is because of the blessings and good wishes of people. That is so because there are so many talented people, who have not tasted success. I will appeal to my fans to go to cinema halls on June 29 and save me (laughs).
When I did my music videos people praised my performance. At that time I had also denied that I will turn into an actor but one thinks a lot before taking the plunge.
Prashant was convinced that I would make a good actor. When he finalised the script and showed it to me, I really liked it and at that point, I thought that I should do it. I am satisfied with my performance in Aap Kaa Surroor. The verdict will be out on June 29.
The film has been surrounded by quite a few controversies.
Yes. People pointed fingers at the fact that Hansika, the heroine of the film, is just 16. But so was Dimple Kapadia, when she made her debut in Bobby.
Also, many eyebrows were raised when it was published that Mallika Sherawat was paid Rs one and half crores for a 10-minute appearance. But let me clarify that she has a full-fledged negative role in the film.
Amidst all this, Ashaji (Bhosle) wanted to slap me about the R D Burman controversy but I apologised her and also persuaded her to sing a duet with me in the film by gaining proper rights of the Mehbooba song.
There’s a mystery behind my cap or why girls always leave me in my music videos. People will get to know the reason behind that in my film.
We had shot two endings of the film, one sad and the other, happy. But after much debate, we zeroed in on one ending.
But why the song Mehbooba?
I am the biggest fan of R D Burman. I wanted to pay my tribute to him and have done after permission from Ashaji.
Mallika plays a negative role, and the sequence demanded such a song. I wanted to sing that song in my own voice. I have not matched even one percent of what Burmansaab did to the song. I have only tried singing a song that people wanted to listen in their own way.
In this film, you have taken off your cap, and smiled as well.
The plot of the film is not related to any real incident. It’s a dhamaal film. But whatever questions people wanted to ask me, has been answered very smartly through my character. Why I don’t smile or why I always sport a cap — you will get these answers in the film.
And you will get to see me without my cap for 10 minutes.
Why only 10 minutes?
Please make the film a hit first. Then in its sequel, you will get to see me without my cap in the entire film.
That means you have already thought of a sequel to Aap Ka Surroor.
If I thought that the film would be a hit, there is no harm. Otherwise, I will not be in a position to make another film.
Salman Khan is very close to you. He had once said that if you take out your cap, you would attain more success.
Salman’s blessings are always with me. I recently met him at Nagpur and he assured me that the film would definitely be a success.
Tell me, why is it that anything which relates to Himesh always lands up in a controversy?
I started my career in the film industry as a serial producer, then I turned into a music composer and finally into a singer. From the high pitch quality of my tone, it turned into a nasal one, then it was the turn of my beard and cap.
After I tasted success with my international shows, people started wondering how this could happen to me. Initially, it’s difficult to accept things that are unconventional. After I turned into an actor, people said that I should look my face first.
But my answer to all this is that if I have turned into an actor then I should put in all my effort to grab the nuances of my character. And I have followed every minor nuance of my role. The reports I have received after the dialogue promo went on air were very encouraging. The buzz is surely there.
Singer, music composer, actor… what next?
If this film succeeds, then I will surely act again. I will try to do good work and be a good human being. The blessings of the people are there with you only until the time you are a good human being. I will see to it that I keep improving on my work.
Tell us about this auto rickshaw element in your film. After all, they are your biggest fans.
It’s not only the autowallahs, I have blessings from all. Club DJs have appreciated my music. The element of paying tribute to autowallahs in the film was entirely Prashant’s idea. He suggested to me that we should pay tribute to my biggest fans.
Since the time of Tere Naam, they have been listening to my music. There is a scene where I get entangled in some trouble and these autowallahs save me. It was picturised in Frankfurt, Germany. It has come out pretty well and is one of the highlights of the film.
