Mukta Arts sells remake rights of ‘Karzzzz’ to T-series for Rs 30 million

MUMBAI: Subhash Ghai promoted Mukta Arts has pocketed Rs 3 crore by selling the remake rights of Karzzzz to music supremo T-series. The blockbuster Karzzzz released in 1980 has been a big grosser for the company.

However, Mukta Arts has retained the packaging rights of the cassettes, CDs and DVDs of the remake of Karzzzz, says Mukta Arts CEO Ravi Gupta.

The T-series produced remake of Karzzzz will be directed by Satish Kaushik and have singer turned actor Himesh Reshammiya enacting the role Rishi Kapoor played in Ghai’s original. Tina Munim and Simi Garewal were the other two leads in the original.

Himesh Reshammiya is going places, literally! On December 1, Reshammiya will perform at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam, a place that has so far only seen Western rock stars performing in pomp.

Says a source close to Himesh, after performing to a packed house at Wembley Stadium in London, Himesh will now be the first Indian to perform at the Heineken Music Hall.

In elite company

Some Western stars who have performed there in the past include Beyonce Knowles, Kanye West, Lauren Hill, Snoop Dogg, P Diddy, Sean Paul, Norah Jones, Akon, 50 Cent, Nelly Furtado, James Blunt, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Rihanna and DJ Tiesto.

Karan Johar’s Koffee Awards to air on 16 Sept NEW!

MUMBAI: With the second season of Koffee With Karan coming to an end, host Karan Johar is now ready with his unique Koffee Awards 2007.

The jury for these awards will be fashion designer Rohit Bal, Malaika Arora and Cyrus Broacha. The awards will be aired on 16 September on Star One and Star World at 9 pm.

Contenders for the awards are the likes of Himesh Reshammiya, Rakhi Sawant and Shah Rukh Khan amongst others. Johar also has a surprise Lifetime Achievement Award in store chosen by him and his favourite episode of the season.

Subhash Ghai has recently sold the rights for his Karz to T-Series. But wasn’t Karz inspired by The Reincarnation Of Peter Proud?

“Yes,” Ghai admits. “But only in one scene where Peter meets his mother. The rest of the story and script was written afresh as per Indian myths and beliefs. You have to see Reincarnation Of Peter Proud to see how different it was from Karz.”
