Himeshji talking about his future projects after Karzzzz…

Published by at 4:09 pm under Karzzzz

He’s been used to success always, ever since he produced, wrote the story of, and composed the title-tracks of almost half-a-dozen television serials in his early twenties, then composed music for Hindi films and reached the top, then turned playback singer and touched gold, and finally faced the camera with great success. Each of these triumphs has been well-planned, and each success has made Himesh Reshammiya confident while retaining his grounded humility and business acumen.

But now for the first time, we see a different Reshammiya – a human being who is as down-to-earth as ever if not more, but with far less self-confidence. And we want to know why. So here’s Himesh in a rare candid mode, explaining to India-West why things are different this time.

On the motivation to remake “Karz” and act in it:

“The role of Monty is being essayed, after the classic dimension given to it by Mr. Rishi Kapoor, by a non-professional like me. So you have a non-professional actor performing, a non-professional dancer doing his moves, and a non-professional fighter in the action scenes. I am approaching the film like a fans’ tribute to a phenomenal actor and to one of his all-time great movies.

“I firmly believe that every movie buff has an actor hidden in him. But very few get lucky enough to discover this talent and bag a chance to demonstrate it. I am very lucky that I could discover this hidden actor within me and also got an opportunity to express myself – that too in the remake of one of my all-time personal favorite films. I am not even one percent of Mr. Rishi Kapoor, either in looks or in acting or dancing skills. So let’s see what happens on Oct. 17, when the people will pass their verdict.”

On the music of his “Karzzzz”:

“I just had to retain the song ‘Ek hasina thi’ from the original Laxmikant-Pyarelal score. I have sung this song in my natural voice without a nasal twang, and in the middle, rather than in the higher, octave. I have sung it like a fan of Kishore Kumar singing in a contest. I am delighted that the legendary Pyare-bhai (Pyarelal) has loved and praised ‘Ek hasina thi’ and my music, and so has Mr. Rishi Kapoor.

“Music is my home-ground and this is the first music I have done in a year, so if I had failed there, mujhe to sau joote padte. I need everyone’s blessings, prayers and support. With such a big-budget and a release as huge as with 1200 prints, I do not want to go wrong on Oct/ 17, which is a date arrived at by my astrologers.”

On why he is so tense when his acting debut was such a big hit:

“I am not nervous, but it’s just that I am not very confident this time. Though I have not tried to match Mr. Rishi Kapoor, I know that comparisons will be there. You must understand that in ‘Aap Kaa Surroor’ I was in a comfort zone, playing myself, complete with my cap and my musical persona that was already a hit because of the music videos of my hit album ‘Aap Ka Surroor’. But ‘Karzzzz’ is my true debut as an actor, because I am portraying a definite character. I have gone on a diet for this film, reduced my weight, aur maine baal bhi lagaaye hain (I have done hair-transplant).

“I am an unconventional hero who has to prove that he is a decent actor. All my five forthcoming films are being made on budgets of Rs 25 crore or higher and if ‘Karzzzz’ does not work, the people behind them can suffer because of their faith in me. A lot of effort and money have gone into making me look presentable at least. An unconventional hero works only if people like him and his film.”

On his approach to the role:

“I have always performed from the heart, not from a technical angle, and frankly, that’s true of my music too. Like I said, I also made an effort to look presentable. But I will tell you something – if people like me in the film, the credit will go to a lot of people – from Bhushanji to my technicians, my co-stars and of course the captain of the ship Satish (Kaushik)ji. I just followed his instructions and the acting nuances he taught me.”

On why he chose Satish Kaushik:

“Satish-ji is a genius. I know this from the four films – ‘Tere Naam’, ‘Vaada’, ‘Shaadi Se Pehle’ and ‘Milenge Milenge’ — that I have done with him. Our rapport is fabulous.”

On not working with established female co-stars:

“I have a complex about that aspect, because I am an unconventional actor. If an established or existing actress co-stars with me and there is a lack of chemistry, meri ‘band’ baj sakti hai! Urmilaji is playing a major role in ‘Karzzzz’ and people have liked the chemistry between us, especially in the song ‘Tandoori nights’. So if ‘Karzzzz’ works, I might begin working with established actresses. But right now, it’s a risk.”

On his films to come:

“Two more films are being produced by T-Series. ‘Kajraare’, directed by Pooja Bhatt, is a very intense romantic thriller. It’s not a remake but a 21st century version of ‘Sadak’. In Studio 18 and Satishji’s ‘Hey Gujju’, I am trying out comedy and am playing two Gujarati characters, small-town guy Karsanlal Pritamlal Gandhi and NRI Ashok Patel in a comedy of errors. In ‘A True Love Isshtory’ by John Matthew Matthan, I am playing a character similar to that of Aamir Khan’s in ‘Rangeela’. Then there is Shree Asthavinayak Cine Vision’s ‘Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh Mud Mud Ke’, which is a mushy triangular love story of the kind I always wanted to do. I am also planning a film with Prashant Chadha, my ‘Aap Kaa Surroor’ director and old friend, and it’s not a sequel.”

On his real-life ‘Karzzzz’ to his father:

“’Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh’ will mark the debut of my father Vipin Reshammiya as music composer. Daddy has sacrificed his career for me and I am repaying my karz (debt) to him by launching him at a time when fathers launch sons. And let me tell you one thing – his music is going to be younger than even mine.”

On his songs in “Karzzzz” and in his films to come:

“I am going to make music that will be in sync with the story and have a young feel along with good melody. From ‘Karzzzz’ right now, ‘Lut jaaoon’, ‘Hari Om’ and ‘Tandoori nights’ are doing phenomenally well in every area – physical sales, ring-tones, the charts and the dance floors, but the other songs will pick up only after the film releases, like the soft melody ‘Dhoom’.”

On why he is reluctant to do films as only a composer:

“I have embarked on a journey where I do not know where I will reach. But right now it’s not a good business model to work also in outside films. I do not want to record more than about 40 songs in a year, and a producer who invests in me as actor-singer-composer will lose his USP if I am composing or singing outside.”

Easy is to get a place is someone’s address book.
Difficult is to get a place in someone’s heart.

Easy is to judge the mistakes of others
Difficult is to recognize our own mistakes

Easy is to talk without thinking
Difficult is to refrain the tongue

Easy is to hurt someone who loves us.
Difficult is to heal the wound…

    Easy is to forgive others
Difficult is to ask for forgiveness

    Easy is to set rules.
    Difficult is to follow them…

Easy is to dream every night.
Difficult is to fight for a dream…

    Easy is to show victory.
Difficult is to assume defeat with dignity…

Easy is to admire a full moon.
Difficult to see the other side…

Easy is to stumble with a stone.
    Difficult is to get up…

Easy is to enjoy life every day.
Difficult to give its real value…

Easy is to promise something to someone.
Difficult is to fulfill that promise…

Easy is to say we love.
Difficult is to show it every day..
