Interview: Subrat Sinha (Lyricist: Radio)

Published by Jem at 6:48 pm under Radio: Love On AIR

‘Mann Ka Radio Bajne De Zara’ has managed to catch everyone’s attention. The man behind the lyrics of this popular song is none other than Subrat Sinha. From being a regular graduate who spent two years only to figure out what he wanted to do in life, he has come a long way.

Starting off as an assistant to film-maker Imtiaz Ali, Subrat has penned scripts, dialogues, and lyrics, besides bagging an award for the title track of the popular TV show Yeh Meri Life Hai. Having contributed lyrics for movies like Rules, Pyar ka Superhit Formula and Socha Na Tha, Subrat is known to have developed his own style, which is evident in Radio as well.

‘Mann Ka Radio’ has struck a chord with the listeners.
That’s great as we have worked very hard on it. Himeshji’s music has released after a year and this is the first time that I have worked with him. Initially, I was a little intimidated. We were working on a new style, in Himesh’s new voice. So, we were skeptical about the way the music of Radio would be perceived by people. But now I’m quite happy as it’s doing very well on the charts.

While in Delhi, I started composing music and singing for theater shows. That’s where I met film-maker Imtiaz Ali. Before arriving in Mumbai, I took two years to decide what I wanted to do. Finally, I enrolled myself in the Film and Television course at Xavier Institute of Communications and simultaneously started working with Imtiaz Ali as an assistant for shows like Purush Kshetra and Imtihaan (serial). Thereafter, I assisted many directors.

Given that Sameersaab has almost always penned lyrics for Himesh, was it difficult for you to get into his shoes?
There was no pressure on me as we are all friends with each other. In fact, Sameersaab, Himesh and I often chat together. I had earlier worked with Himesh as the screenplay and dialogue writer of Ishq Unplugged, and then I wrote the script of Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh. So, there was no such thing as replacing Sameerbhai.

Which song from Radio did you find most challenging to pen?‘Mann ka Radio’ was the most challenging one; earlier I had written on love, human beings and heart breaks, but a subject like this was difficult to pen. It is a common practice to write on such subjects abroad, but in India we hardly pursue anything of this sort. That’s why it took a while for the audience to accept the songs; but once they did, there was no looking back. The response to the music of Radio has been very positive.

How was your experience working with music director Himesh Reshammiya?
It was amazing. He’s very talented and can compose a tune in two minutes flat, so you have to be on your toes to catch up with him. Also, he is very encouraging; sometimes when I used to get stuck in my thinking process and could not come up with anything, he used to tell me to take my own time. It was actually very comforting to work with him.

Were you given any guidelines before penning the lyrics for Radio? What did you kept in mind before starting off the songs?
As such there were no guidelines given to me except that the songs had to be simple. The thoughts process had to be slickly communicated to the audience, that’s what Himeshbhai wanted. And if you listen to the mukhda of each song in Radio, then you would realise that all the songs are very easy to understand. You don’t have to think much, yet they all have a depth and a meaning. Besides keeping it simple, I had all the liberty for writing the lyrics in my style.

Among all the songs of Radio, which one is your personal favourite?
I like ‘Piya Jaise Ladoo’ the most.

What’s next in the pipeline?
Currently, I am working on a new project that has Himeshbhai in the lead. I am working on the script of that film. You will hear about it soon.

I am happy at apart from himesh someone else is also trying to promote the movie radio.
Today ETc meter has given their rating of radio and ( 8 out of 10 times their ratings have worked)
For Perceprton 2/10 ( As the promo does not make it clear whether it is a love story or about radio jockey’s life also whether it is a comedy or a sad movie)
For Promotion 2/10 ( Rare promos on limited channels)
StarCast 4/10 ( only has star singer actor himesh)
Songs 7/10 ( Lack of promotion the work of music director goes for a toss)
    Overall 2/10

This has raised my worries for radio. Agar AAgaaz aisa hai to anjaam kaisa hoga ?

My Anger is not on himesh but on the distributors, producers and T Series as it seems they have no faith in Himesh. Now even in promo Paresh Rawal has been given more importance than the lead actors. Himesh has tried his best by promoting Radio on various TV shows. If radio does not work than it will be fault of lack of pomotion and publicty and nothing else. The worst part will be that the music director and singer Himesh work will be ignored.
I always supported himesh acting decision. But when i saw that due to failure of Himesh as an actor, Himesh as a singer and composer to to pay the price of it. I was really dissapointed . Hope still one months in hand Himesh can think of some better idea to make Radio a superhit.

Jem belive me if Radio become superhit than no one will be as happy as me not even himesh. Thing which hurt me more is that ETC and Zing channels belong to Zee Network and we all know Himesh has produced serials for zee TV. Also for Saregampa has been super hit only because of himesh. Saregampa 2007 & 2009 tried to show himesh as arrogant in order to get good TRP but still Himesh always praised the show. Today that same Zee family is trying to put down himesh. Is Himesh listining to this ?

@Kashti: I totally understand how you feel – I have been watching Zing regularly trying to catch Radio promos but they never show them. It’s better we don’t speculate & just hope that they work something out & start playing the promos soon! :D

HR will start shooting for M2KM2K after RADIO release.

The film started in 2008 but shooting hasn’t completed as HR was busy shooting for KAJRAREE, NEW LOVE ISTORY, ISHQ UNPLUGGED.

ISHQ UNPLUGGED shooting is the latest film HR made in 2009 from start to finish shoot just before RADIO.

jem: i want to tell you that it depends upon producer that on which channel they want to promote their film,as they has to pay for it(they choose certain channels as their media patner).i think as the budget of the film is low, that may be a reason why their no promos on etc………
