@Puru: We will only be able to add the show to HRTV if it is uploaded onto youtube. Please check your TV listings for the correct timings for the Radio special - I know there are at least 5-6 showings of this show at different times on the channel. Enjoy :D Jem

Isshaan Trivedi, who made his debut as a director with the Juhi Chawla-Irrfan starrer 7 1/2 Phere, is ready with Radio. Days prior to its release, Tollywood’s Rudranil Ghosh has alleged that Isshaan has bootlegged his script of Hello Dear to create Radio. The matter is up in the air but the director thinks Rudranil is just hot air. Excerpts:

How did you come up with the concept of making a film on a radio jockey?

My first film dwelled upon behind the scenes action in the visual media. I thought I’d make a trilogy with two more films — one on the broadcast media and the other on the print media. When I first met Himesh, I had a couple of ideas. He suggested if I could come up with an idea about a radio jockey. Since I had headed programming at various channels, the subject seemed appropriate. What struck me as interesting was that while RJs create a world of their own for their listeners; their personal lives are not half as exciting. RJ Vivan Shah is a wannabe singer. He solves others’ problems by fixing them on air, but his own remain unsolved. Just out of a bitter divorce, he is commitment phobic. To make matters worse, his wife is also on the rebound.

How much was Himesh involved with giving direction to the script?

We worked in tandem. While I wrote the script, he offered his creative inputs. Such interactions used to happen during the days of Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar. We don’t have idiot actors any longer.

There are allegations of Radio’s script being filched from a Bengali script...

I’m hearing this for the first time. I’d be pleased if a case is filed against us. That will give the prosecutor adequate
publicity. Mine is an original script, not a single line is a lift. While doing our workshops, I was told that there is indeed a movie called Radio. I got hold of a DVD and found that it has no parallels to a radio jockey.

Does this allegation smack of a publicity hungry celeb?

I don’t know him at all. Only 20 guys have watched my film. I’d request him to first watch my film and then decide whether any bit has been copied. Promos stating that the film is about a small-town RJ who plays shrink on air doesn’t make my film a copy. As for the name of the character, I was initially supposed to call her Sia after my friend’s daughter’s name. In the late 80s, scripts used to be pinched. That doesn’t happen any more. Fifteen years ago, my friend — Urmi— had also got a compensation of Rs 18 lakh when someone stole her script. It’s difficult nowadays.

Has anyone ever levelled such allegations against you?

I had written 7 1/2 Phere in seven days. A friend of mine had once claimed that the film was based on his idea. I invited him to watch the film. After the screening, he said that he had been given a wrong report. People commission me to write scripts now. It’s important for a creative person to protect his intellectual rights by registering the script before complaining. Give this actor my number, just so that he can give me his feedback once he’s watched my movie.
