Interview Excerpt:

How did you get your break?

Within a few days of arriving here, I got a call from Andy Singh, the CEO of Himesh Reshammiya’s music company. He’d heard me at a gathering and wanted to meet me. He’s a simple, humble and innocent man, unlike the people you meet in the city. He received me with a lot of respect and said he wanted to hear more. Andy brought a harmonium into his office and called for Himesh Reshammiya, who was working upstairs, to hear out my voice. Himeshji was rushing for a meeting and had only two minutes with him. He ended up listening to me for four hours. He called all his entire members from home and it ended up being a mehfil of sorts. We went on to record Desi Beat. At that time, I had no clue about what goes into playback singing — neither how to sing behind a mike or how to work within a studio. But Himeshji was very encouraging and appreciative. He summed up his reaction in one word: ‘Funtastic’. Salman came with his crew to the studio after a few days. He decided to give me a break in Bodyguard. Since my voice had a rustic Punjabi quality to it, he got Mika Singh to do one version and called my version of the song Punjabi Hip Hop Mix.

Who are your friends in the industry?

Mika, Pritam, Himeshji and Randeep Hooda are some of the many folks I count on as friends.

What’s keeping you busy?

I am singing over 20 songs this year, including songs for a couple of film projects with Meet Brothers, Himeshji and Pritam.
